Biden Announces His Intention to Lose to HRC

Gotta say, I'm a little confused by the angle he's chosen here. A fight for the soul of the nation, huh? If that's true, Biden sure as hell ain't the guy to win it. He's an old pol with a real talent for reaching out to the white working class, which makes him a real contender in 2020. Pair him up with someone acceptable to the left-left (Warren?) and he could really play in the general with a pitch based more or less around "a return to normalcy." There's elements of that approach here, but he's got the fucking Avengers theme music behind him and he's talking about the "veins bulging" on the faces of the Charlottesville tiki torch brigade and turning Heather Heyer into some kind of Democratic Robert Paulson. This fits in with the apocalyptic tenor of modern news coverage, but I think it's ultimately pretty silly and disconnected from the world of politics as it actually exists.

Charlottesville isn't the first time klansman and neo-nazis rallied in American history. It happens all the time, actually, albeit usually without as much press coverage and with no body count. That kind of shit is truly an "aberrant" event, and coming out of the gate by implying that all Trump supporters are in league with nazis might check some boxes for Democratic twitter but it's going to be a huge burden come fall. Joe Biden just took a shit on a lot of people who could conceivably vote for him, while framing his run as being not about specific policies but rather "tone" and returning to "who we are" which are pretty sandy terrains to base a modern presidential bid on.

This is a doomed strategy, too, because it's predicated on making Joe Biden the moral arbiter of American decency. No politican can win based on their morality, because all it takes is a few stories that imply hypocrisy to unmake the whole argument of their campaign. People hate hypocrites more than assholes, which is why Trump, as an open asshole, is so invincible. It's no accident he released this on the same day as Avengers: Endgame. Listen to that fucking music, man...

Joe Biden ain't Captain America and in the real world people want to hear about foreign policy, automation, student loan forgiveness, opiods ... and they want to laugh. Biden's trying to scare you, worse than Trump was trying to scare you in 2016. Trump said the American dream was dead but he was gonna bring it back bigger and stronger, but he also had policies (vague policies but policies still) attached to it. Immigration! Foreign wars! The loss of the manufacturing base! Joe Biden could have taken all of that language for himself but instead he chose to paint the whole thing as a "battle for the soul of America." Motherfucker doesn't get it.

Motherfucker's gonna lose to HRC, and everything will be right again.
